Each day of Art Basel Miami Beach, a graduating visual arts BFA student from New World School of the Arts will present an original, site-specific performative installation at the ArtSeen exhibit space in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood arts district. These uniquely expressed and constructed artworks will be presented consecutively, each open to experience for one day only— a new performative installation every day.

Across a generation, an artist’s work speaks to nascent artists. In collaboration with Miami’s renowned New World School of the Arts, Wet Heat Project’s “A Piece of Me” presents a multi-modal exhibition of visual conversations between four of the school’s most acclaimed alumni artists and a select group of visual art high school students enrolled at the same school today.

Working in teams of two, eight high school students of varying media practices conceive, develop and produce a video installation in response to one of the alumni works. The bold contrast in disciplines between the source works and the students’ response sharpens focus on the students’ core ideas, expression, and quality of production.

Logan Marconi and Andrew Hendrixson, University of Florida MFA candidates, are available for studio visits on the evening of Wednesday August 3rd. At 6:45 we will have pizza with Andrew and Logan, and studio visits will commence at 7:30. Anyone wishing to have a studio visit must sign up in advance via Facebook or by emailing Christy.

Logan Marconi
Logan Marconi is currently a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Florida. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from Herron School of Art & Design in Indianapolis, where he was awarded the Cole Porter Arts Foundation Scholarship for
undergraduate study in the fine arts. As a painter his body of work consists mainly of large scale paintings that explore themes related to memory, perceptual experience and consciousness. His current body of work focuses on how problems associated with mental imagery and representation can be expressed through an artistic medium. Philosophically, Logan is concerned with the capacity for artwork to be veridical and artistic practice to be a belief informing process. As such, he places a priority on being honest and ethical in his studio practice. This summer Logan is participating in the Whale and Star Workshop which is a unique opportunity to implement his artistic philosophy by allowing his body of work to be constructively
criticized by other artists.

Andrew Hendrixson Bio
Andrew Hendrixson was born and raised near Cincinnati, Ohio. He
attended Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio where he studied English
and fine art. Following the completion of his bachelor’s degree in 2008, Andrew
began his graduate studies in painting and drawing at the University of Florida
and, incidentally, will graduate with his M.F. A. on Saturday! Following
graduation, Andrew will be heading to Ohio where he has accepted a position
as an Assistant Professor of Art and Design at Mount Vernon Nazarene
University.His work his informed by sources ranging widely from the characters who
loiter about in the writings of Flannery O’Connor, the poetry of T. S. Eliot, to the
hand sewn and intuitively astute quilts of Gee’s Bend.
His most recent series, On the Poetic Accumulations of Inefficient Time
Well Spent, explores the distinction between habit and ritual; the frivolity of the
former countered by the intentionality of the latter. As a vehicle toward this
intentionality, the project engages notions of labor, repetition, and inefficiency
as endeavors bearing the gravity of ritualistic practice.
Andrew’s work is currently being shown in two group exhibitions, one at
the Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, the other at the First Street Gallery in the
Chelsea district in New York City.

WORKSHOP with The Viking Funeral (Carlos Ascurra and Juan Gonzalez)

CONCEPT: Workshop will look at how audio may function as an art material. We will draw on our own experiences as artists working with audio and with music-related imagery. We will also look at other audio-rich art practices that have influenced us.

First 20-25 minutes: Present a series of art practices that have employed audio, as well as fringe musical genres (DIY noise, in particular), that serve as precedent for Viking Funeral’s practices. This will be done through a powerpoint presentation, and video and audio clips.

Last 40 minutes: As the hands-on part of the workshop, we will produce a series of audio clips with the students employing the analogue technologies (pedals, instruments, altered amplifiers) that serve as our main art-producing means in the studio.

ABOUT VIKING FUNERAL

Under the moniker Viking Funeral Juan Gonzalez and Carlos Ascurra collaboratively explore the constructs of DIY music subcultures. Through the use of sculpture, collage, sound, and performance they examine the self-governed parameters, identities, and propaganda formed by annexed groups of people. Their work occasionally attempts to deconstruct or confuse vernacular via fake flyers for shows, and fake fanzines, etc. Although, as a point of distinction, Viking Funeral also functions in a “scene” as a band which plays (subversively) live and loud.

Proposals, Presentations and Attitudes for the Working Artist

Presented by artist Nick Lobo, this workshop takes on the subject of presenting your ideas to a wide variety of individuals and organizations both in and out of the art sphere. Often it takes the co-operation of many people to execute an artwork, this workshop seeks to shed some light on the possible strategies available to communicate with and enlist the help of others. Subjects including: digital imaging and formatting, CAD for the non-professional, project presentation, and approaching uninterested individuals will be covered. You are encouraged to bring in your own projects for development.

About the artist:
Nicolas Lobo received his BFA from The Cooper Union in New York City in 2004. Born in Los Angeles, CA in 1979, he now lives and works in Miami, FL. He has had solo exhibitions at Twenty Twenty Projects and Locust Projects, both in Miami, FL. Additionally, Lobo’s work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including Space as Medium, Miami Art Museum; Night Shift, BASS Museum; The Possibility of an Island, MOCA, North Miami, FL; and On the Pleasure of Hating, Lisa Cooley Fine Art, New York, NY. Recently, he completed a book for [NAME] Publications, edited by Gean Moreno and published with the help of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Concurrently, Nicolas Lobo’s work can be seen in the group exhibition at de la Cruz Collection, Miami, FL

Curated by dean Cuesta along with recognized gallerist Fredric Snitzer, Untitled offers the audience a treat through its diverse and dynamically unexpected works. The Run Away, by HS senior Audrey Gair, is a performance work featuring the artist living and functioning in her own world within the gallery and yet totally open to spectators. Moises Sanabria, a sophomore in the college program, offers The Bohemians, a dozen wood musicians nostalgically playing Queen’s epic 1970′s song Bohemian Rhapsody. Meanwhile, college junior Renata Rojo’s untitled work is a thought-provoking surprise suspended from the ten-foot ceiling of the gallery.
