Blake Rayne is a painter who was born in Delaware in 1969 and lives and works in New York City. He received his BFA from Cal Arts in 1992. He is currently represented by the following galleries: Campoli Presti (London/Paris), Miguel Abreu (New York), 1301 PE (Los Angeles). Recent solo exhibitions include Wild Country (2012, Campoli Presti, London), Shade Subscription (2011, Petzel Capitain, Berlin), This is New York City (2011, Formalist Sidewalk Poetry Club, Miami), Folder and Application (2010, Miguel Abreu Gallery, New York). From 2003-2009, he was an assistant professor of painting and director of graduate studies at Columbia University, School of the Arts, New York, NY.

Ray Lopez: Portraiture

How would you define Portraiture?
Allow Ray Lopez to challenge your definition by attending his third solo show Personas.
Ray has been bringing his audience breathtaking works since he graduated from NWSA with honors and distinction in 2005. He went on to study illustration at Art Center College of Design where he graduated with his BFA in 2008.
His latest show, Personas, introduces us to his on-going portrait exploration, which challenges the conventions of portraits and captures his love of realism and experimentation.
Through his paintings and drawings, we see his distinguished style of fragmented-process painting and drawing. The process involves painting or drawing one piece of his subjects at a time. At the end, he arranges all the pieces together, leaving the final outcome to fate. His other works involve the blind-contour process, a technique that allows him to draw his subjects without looking down at the drawing until he completes it. Again, leaving the final outcome to fate.
His subjects range from the President of the United States, to a world-wide music sensation to his beloved grandfather. Ray’s show “Personas” allows us to share his vision of iconic figures and allows us to enjoy the ways in which he captures their essence.
[PERSONAS] Opening Night will be Saturday, April 14th from 5-9pm at the prestigious New World School of the Arts ArtSeen Gallery located in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District. Admission and street parking is free during this Second Saturday Artwalk Night, where galleries in the Wynwood Arts District open their doors to the public for a night of art, music, food, and performances.

Leo Castañeda: Levels & Bosses

As a start to the new year, the Artseen Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Leo Castañeda titled “Levels and Bosses”, Opening Saturday, January 14th at 5pm during Wynwood’s Second Saturday Artwalk.

Castañeda creates works that link elements of the past, present and future into a timeless mythology. This myth is organized under the hierarchies of video games where environments are known as “Levels”, and the personified environments/ characters are called “Bosses”. Visually, the result is a mix of atmospheric Romantic landscapes and an oriental Zen aesthetic, created with minimalist geometric and abstracted elements. Though the works begin as paintings, they branch out into animations, comic books, sculptures and live performances.

Attend the exhibit to experience a survey of nearly three years worth of work, focused mostly on “Level One”, a colossal explosion where solids, liquids and gases are interchangeable, and “The First Boss”, a black rectangular box that is the source and end of the entire “Level”.

A special performance will be on view, only during opening night.

Leo Castañeda graduated New World School of the Arts in 2006 and The Cooper Union 2010. This spring he will attend Hunter College to pursue his MFA.

Wet Heat Project Presents

Each day of Art Basel Miami Beach, a graduating visual arts BFA student from New World School of the Arts will present an original, site-specific performative installation at the ArtSeen exhibit space in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood arts district. These uniquely expressed and constructed artworks will be presented consecutively, each open to experience for one day only— a new performative installation every day.

AND

Across a generation, an artist’s work speaks to nascent artists. In collaboration with Miami’s renowned New World School of the Arts, Wet Heat Project’s “A Piece of Me” presents a multi-modal exhibition of visual conversations between four of the school’s most acclaimed alumni artists and a select group of visual art high school students enrolled at the same school today.

Working in teams of two, eight high school students of varying media practices conceive, develop and produce a video installation in response to one of the alumni works. The bold contrast in disciplines between the source works and the students’ response sharpens focus on the students’ core ideas, expression, and quality of production.
